Braids, links and the Jones polynomial

A way to study links is through braids. To classify links up to isotopy is equivalent to classify braids up to Markov moves. I will explain by an example, due to Morton, the complexity of the classification problem.

As usual in classifications we seek algebraic invariants. I will introduce the Jones polynomial, for which the author received the Fields medal.

Clement Radu Popescu is a professor of Institute of Mathematics of the Romannian Academy. His research interests includes representation varieties and cohomology jump loci; con guration spaces; arrangements of hyperplanes; braids, links and 3-manifolds; mapping class groups and its subgroups; combinatorial group theory. In 2019, he got the Romanian Academy “Gheorghe Lazăr award”.
