Emergent Quantum Spin Liquids and Fractional Excitations in Correlated Systems

The search for the exotic quantum spin phasesand excitations constitutes one of the most important and hot issues in moderncondensed matter physics. In this talk, I will first give a review ofsome quantum spin phases realized in correlatedsystems and their corresponding elementary excitations. Then, I will presentour recent investigations on the derivation of a minimal effective spin model forα-RuCl3 and itscomparison to neutron scatterings, which demonstrate therealization of the Kitaev interaction in a real material, the concept centralto the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. I will also discuss the confined anddeconfined fractional excitations in spin ordered and liquid states.

主讲人介绍：

李建新，南京大学物理学院教授，现任南京大学物理学院院长。1993年于武汉大学获博士学位。1993.9起于南京大学历任博士后、副教授、教授。先后在台湾中研院物理研究所、美国加州大学伯克利分校从事一年的访问研究。2005年获国家杰出青年科学基金。2008年度受聘为教育部长江学者特聘教授。2008年作为团队负责人获教育部创新团队。主要从事强关联电子系统、低维量子自旋系统物性以及高温超导物理的理论研究。
